My father, SFC O. V. Rainey who was the mess sgt. at the VAHS cafeteria in '65-'66
passed away in Franklin, Tennessee on Feb. 3, 2005 of acute lukemia.  He was a wonderful father and a devoted American.  Among other awards, he was given 3 bronze stars and two purple hearts.  He served in WWll, Korea and Viet Nam.  He would have been 84 on April 4th.  He is survived by his wife of 64 years, daughters, Nancy (John) Ringer, Martha (Dale) Griffin and son, Ed Rainey, 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.  Among some of the interesting things he witnessed were the Big Three Meeting in Potsdam,  The War Trials and he served as chef to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.  As you can tell we were extremely proud to call him our father.

Subject: Update For All Brats & Educators (Osb11-901)
To: webmaster@vahs.org

Hi!
Hope you had a great summer!
A few things to share with you.

1. American Overseas Schools Historical Society (AOSHS)

Historical Park site dedication, July 21, 2001 & Brat Reflection.
What a proud moment for all Military Brats, Overseas Brats, their
Educators, and family members, as they came to Wichita to see and be
a part of milestone in the history of our treasured heritage!
The City of Wichita really rolled out the red carpet to let us all know
that we had come to our home town!

Friday evening, July 20, City of Wichita officials gathered us to
provide an official welcome and let us know that we were truly welcomed in this,
our new home town.

Saturday the City of Wichita provided air-conditioned buses for all
participants, some tenting and seating, and ice water to combat the heat
on this extremely hot afternoon when the mercury hit 106.
Once we arrived at the site there were a couple surprises.
The military was present to greet, welcome and honor us!
The 312th Army Band (provided thanks to a Military Brat named
Buz Altshuler) struck up a patriotic air, and the McConnell AFB Color
Guard stood at attention as Brats and Educators disembarked from
the buses, some carrying banners to proclaim to all who they were.
The program with a half dozen or so speakers was kept to about
25 minutes or so, because of the extreme heat.

That very hot afternoon in July was a very PROUD moment for the
Brats, Educators, and others who came. Looking over the hundreds
of faces, I couldn't help but think that afternoon was truly a milestone
in my life. We all had finally come to a home town that truly wanted
us. And here were we stood would one day house a museum, visitor's
center, and an archive to preserve and tell the world ALL our stories!

SPECIAL THANKS TO...the City of Wichita....AOSHS.....The
312th Army Band (& Buz Altshuler)...The McConnell AFB Color Guard...
and ALL the Brats, Educators, and others who made that day such a
memorable experience for all of us!!!!
    AOSHS's web site is: aoshs.wichita.edu

2. Money raised for AOSHS from OVERSEAS BRATS activities.

One of the main purposes of Homecoming 2001 (see below) was to raise
money for AOSHS. So far this year, from Homecoming 2001 and other
OVERSEAS BRATS services and memberships, $1,477 has been raised.

Since 1997, OVERSEAS BRATS members, the participants at
Homecoming'99 and Homecoming 2001, and those who have used
OVERSEAS BRATS services have raised $16,710.90 for AOSHS.

Thanks to all for being so supportive of AOSHS!

3. Military-Brats Internet Services Network.

The Military-Brats Network is proud to announce the opening of the
Military-Brats Internet Services Network!

By purchasing your internet service via the Military Brats Network you
will besupporting the Network, as well as the free Registry, by doing more
than you do now...paying for internet access.

And for alumni and other Brats organization, there's a shared network
plan that can help earn money for your group by providing your members
with internet service!
Visit the http://www.military-brats.com site for details!

4. Homecoming 2001 & DoDDS XIII (Educators) Reunion.

Briefly....there were 475 participants representing more than 200
communities, bases, and overseas schools at Homecoming 2001.
The DoDDS XIII Reunion had 498. Both events were held in conjunction
with the AOSHS Historical Park site dedication in Wichita, KS.

Complete editorial and pictorial coverage of the AOSHS Historical
Park site dedication, Homecoming 2001, and the DoDDS XIII Reunion will
be in the December 2001 edition of OVERSEAS BRATS.

5. Web site for DoDDS Educators.

This is new! Each year the DoDDS Educators have their own reunion,
with the next one (called the DoDDS XIV Reunion) is planned for Denver
in the Summer of 2002. Check it out at: www.geocities.com/doddsxivreunion .

6. Upcoming Events For ALL Brats Update.

In a previous update, it was shared that the Chicago Metro Area, and
the Carolinas (specifically Asheville, NC) were being considered for future
Brat activities. Since that update, 53 Brats have advised us they want to
be kept posted of anything that happens in the Chicago area, and 28
expressed interested in a Carolinas function in Asheville. Stay tuned!

Events that are on the books, and some of their features:

*The "Colorado Springs Gathering," Oct. 25-28, 2001, at the Sheraton
Colorado Springs, in Colorado Spring, CO. This event has turned out to
be VERY popular! This is because our room block at the Sheraton is now
sold out (we have overflow space at an adjacent hotel), 306 Brats & Educators
have requested to be kept posted about it, a half dozen schools are planning
***some kind of event*** in conjunction with this event! Highlights of this
event include Operation Footlocker, the Mobile Brat Monument present
(please note that this is a separate entity from OVERSEAS BRATS),
our sessions (Dr. Tom Drysdale of AOSHS has advised he is planning to
come host a session on AOSHS), our exhibition, and our social activities.
Weekly email updates are going out to keep everyone advised of exciting
developments.

*Washington, DC Regional Get-Together of All Military Brats &
Overseas Brats, Saturday, November 3, 2001, in Fairfax, VA. At this
reporting 481 of our peers have asked to be kept posted.

Question: Is there someone in the DC area who is planning on attending
this event willing to accept shipment of Operation Footlocker, transport it
to the site of the function, and ship it?
Contact Gene Moser at: STEAM GENE@aol.com

*Virginia Tidewater Regional Get-Together of All Military Brats &
Overseas Brats, Sunday, November 4, 2001, in Hampton, VA. We have
125 asking for more information. Operation Footlocker will be there!

*BUFF ("Brats Ultimate Florida Fun") for All Military Brats &
Overseas Brats, November 9-11, 2001 at the Ramada Inn Resort Maingate,
Kissimmee, FL. A full weekend of fun, and some opportunities to meet
and network! At this time, 280 are showing some interest in this FUN
event.

Question: Is there someone in the Orlando area who is planning on
attending this event willing to accept shipment of Operation Footlocker,
transport it to the site of the function, and ship it? Contact Gene Moser
at: STEAM GENE@aol.com
Visit www.overseasbrats.com or email JoeOSBPRES@aol.com
for more information. Specify which event you are interested in.
Then come join us, and meet your Brat peers!
7. Want a copy of a recent OVERSEAS BRATS publication?

It's yours for the asking! Just need a name and a mailing address to

3) Vacation/Reunion destinations. Spotlight on:
                                      Asheville, NC
Nestled among the highest peaks of the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky
Mountains, lies a paradise on earth - Asheville, North Carolina. Asheville is
Western North Carolina's largest city and one of the most desirable places in
the nation to visit. Among other honors, our beautiful city has been named
one of Vacations magazine's top ten getaway destinations.

newsletter available.
OVERSEAS BRATS is exploring the possiblity of having an event for those
who live in the Carolinas to happen in Asheville. Do you live in the
Carolinas or would you be interested in being kept posted about this event?

                                 Copper Canyon, Mexico
The Copper Canyon is the "real" Mexico that you never see at the beach resorts
and cruise ship stops. Featuring one of the world's most spectacular train
rides and a canyon system bigger and deeper than the Grand Canyon, the Copper
Canyon is a "must see" destination with a variety of cultural, natural and
historical wonders. Like "industrial strength" margaritas, for example!
Easy air connections to Los Mochis, Mexico from Phoenix and Tucson put
this great reunion destination within your reach. For more information, visit:
www.coppercanyonadventures.com
A Brat Copper Canyon trip is being considered for Spring 2002.
Interested?
4. Brat Reflection. Memorial Day. Let's remember it in our own special
way, and pay tribute to those who served and who are serving today!
What was the single incident that affected the lives of every American?
The bombing of Pearl Harbor. Why?
The event began World War II for the U.S., sending approximately 16
million men and women into uniform, many which include our fathers and mothers, and
changed the futures of every American living then and now..
MANY of us would not be alive today if it hadn't been for Pearl Harbor.
This single event set off a whole series of events for every person
alive then and now on a scale that can't be fully appreciated or imagined.
Just an observation ~ that's all!
5) Twelve skills or traits that many Brats have that make them attractive to
perspective employeers: We're: creative, talented, open to relocating,
willing to have new friendships, highly motivated, active team members,
visionaries, risk-takers, respectful of others, tolerant of other races and
cultures; we problems as challenges, and we see the big picture.
6) Looking for Brats who live in Colorado, the DC Metro Area, Virginia Tidewater
region and in Florida. Events will be happening in your backyard soon!
Plan an event with your friends/peers in conjunction with specifically
the Colorado Springs (in October) or Florida (November) events, and see how your
and your group will benefit! Contact me directly for specifics.
7) OVERSEAS BRATS web site Guestbook update. It's been upgraded, thanks
to Brat web masters Sharon Ray Renno and Laith Renno!
     Visit it at: www.overseasbrats.com
It's now a database that can be searched by an individual's name, school
name, base, city, country, whatever! Put in Italy, for example, and you'll
get all the messages that contain that word. Put in Smith, and you'll get all messages
that contain Smith. Put in TAS, Nouasseur, Livorno -- you get the
picture! This means you don't have to repeat their entries every so often to
get people's attention.
8) Homecoming 2001 (Wichita, KS, July 19-22, 2001) Update.
    ***268 registered, 1,658 responses, 190 schools/communities/bases
represented! Visit: www.overseasbrats.com . Join us at this event, which
happens at the same time of the American Overseas Schools Historical
Society's (AOSHS) site dedication of YOUR historical park, and the
educator's reunion!
9) Publications.
Among the general purpose publications that are orientated for all

    2. Is your base/school/housing area/alumni group, etc. planning a reunion
in 2001? If so, please advise when, where, and who to contact, so I can get
         the word out. Thanks!
   3. Brat Reflection. Dealing with that four letter word "from", as in,
       "Where are you from?"
We've all heard this before and have faced a challenge in responding to it
        right? "Where are you from?"
Over the past several years I've come up with a coping mechanism.
It really depends on who is asking the question and in what way is the
        question being asked.
Some times it is asked by people who could care less if I were "from"
the Planet Zeeb or Wichita, so I end up saying, "Wichita," and I get a
disinterested response, "I use to have a cousin who lived in Kansas City."
However if there is some genuinely interested, I'll say something like...
"I live in Wichita now, but I'm an Army Brat that grew up all over," and many
times over I get a positive response like, "Oh, my friend at work is a Navy Brat!"
At one of the reunions I attended some years ago, one of the women
at the event made a comment, "You know, this is the first time in 20 years
I haven't had to spend a half an hour explaining to any and everyone where
I'm from?" We all laughed. She was right!
I find that a word like "from" tends to make me focus and define my
Brat experience each time I hear that expression, "Where are you from?"
How do you respond to the question, "Where are you from?"

   5. American Overseas Schools Historical Society's (AOSHS) Historical Park
site dedication, Saturday, July 21, 2001, Wichita, KS.
What a PROUD day this will be for all of us - dedicating a site we all
can call as our "home" in our new Brat hometown - Wichita!
AOSHS is working hard on the details for this very historic event (stay
tuned by visiting the AOSHS site at: http://aoshs.wichita.edu ), and
although no plans have been announced, Dr. Tom Drysdale, AOSHS Director
would like us all there and showcase our heritage for the whole world to see!
Some ideas? Wear Military Brat/school/alumni group t-shirts, bring a banner,
flag, etc., that represents whenever/wherever you were a Brat!
Those who register for Homecoming 2001 (see below) will be pleased to
know that a portion of their registration fees will go to AOSHS (like we did

Subject: Update For All Brats (Osb11)

Hi!

The holidays are here, and I hope you have a lot to look forward to!

Some things to share with you.

1. Leaving messages for other Brats. For quite a few weeks, the guestbook on the Overseas Brats Online Web Site: www.vni.net/~mcl/osb/osbmain.htm (which is NOT my web site) has not been operational. The official OVERSEAS BRATS web site: www.overseasbrats.com now welcomes all Brats to leave messages!

2. American Overseas Schools Historical Society (AOSHS) Update. Creating Memorials at the Brat Home Town Historical Park - better known as the American Overseas Schools Historical Society's (AOSHS) Historical Park. Want the specifics? Just ask, and they will be sent you, pronto! OVERSEAS BRATS has been supporting AOSHS since 1989. Since 1997 a portion of the membership fees and a portion of the profits from our hosted events totalling $15,233.90 have gone to support AOSHS as they plan a historical park which will have a museum, visitor's center, and an archive that celebrates YOUR special BRAT heritage. In 2000, OVERSEAS BRATS moved to Wichita, KS, site of the future AOSHS Historical Park to offer whatever support is needed to make this a reality - a HOME in a HOME TOWN for ALL us BRATS!

3. Brat Reflection. The holidays. For many of us Brats, growing up either as a Military Brat or an Overseas Brat, the December holidays were often spent away from grandparents and other family members at either a base or a location hundreds, if not thousands of miles from where our parents called home. The local base or community we lived provided activities or events such as unique displays, concerts and other programs (hey - let's not forget the parties!) that said Christmas was a special time - and much more, even during difficult times. The holidays will always remain for me a core Brat experience - a time for assimiliating how other parts of the U.S. or the world celebrated the holiday, and a time for understanding that other Brats were undergoing the same experience, far from what we knew as "home" in the U.S. Today when I think of Christmas, I don't necessarily think of it in terms of a physical place in the U.S. or grandparents and other family members were, but I recall the Brat friends (who were like family to me) and how we celebrated the holidays whenever or wherever we were. Here's wishing you a wonderful holiday season!

4. OVERSEAS BRATS - now an organization for all "Brats!" Ever since this organization was founded in 1986, it has constantly been undergoing an evolution in order to serve the needs of the Brat community. And for the past couple of years, the mission has become to serve the needs of ALL Brats, regardless when or where they lived, and without regard if they were former military dependents or dependents of oil company, missionary, business or other governmental activities abroad. Family members, friends, and others involved with us are welcomed to join us, too! We ALL have MUCH in common and we ALL should be together as ONE organization! While the name of the organization OVERSEAS BRATS won't change because it is so well-known, our mission has: to serve the "whole" Brat community!

5. Follow-up on the November regionals. For the functions held last month....32 attended the Washington, DC, event....19 came to the Virginia Tidewater function....22 participated in the Florida daytime event, and 19 that evening. In all cases, we had a wide variety of Brats who were Brats from the 1940's to the present from as many different locations from throught the U.S. and overseas. In all events...we learned....we shared.....we found much in common.... we laughed....we found meaning in who we are as Brats....we had fun...and the time went by too fast!

6. Pending get-togethers for all Brats. We're expanding these! Dates & locations..... *Arizona (Phoenix Metro area) - Wednesday, January 17, 2001. *Southern California area - Saturday, January 20, 2001. *Central Texas - Thursday, March 8, 2001. *Dallas-Fort Worth area - Saturday, March 10, 2001. *Oklahoma (Oklahoma City Metro area) - Sunday, March 11, 2001. *Colorado (Colorado Springs) - October 25-28, 2001 (the annual national convention of all Brats). *Washington, DC Metro area - Saturday, November 3, 2001. *Virginia Tidewater area (Hampton) - Sunday, November 4, 2001. *Florida (Orlando/Kissimmee) (aka, "BUFF" Brats Ultimate Florida Fun!) Subject: Update For Military Brats & Overseas Brats (Osb11-1000)
Hi!
Hope this finds you doing well! News to share with you:
1. Transcript information. One of the most frequent questions asked
is - how do I get my school transcripts? If you attended a private American
overseas schools, contact the school directly. If you attended a military
school (now known as DoDEA or Department of Defense Educational
Activity) call the Educational Testing Service at 1-800-257-9484 during
regular
business hours, Monday thru Friday. This is a New Jersey telephone number.
I'm told there's a nominal fee involved.
2. Interested in teaching abroad or in the military school system
(stateside or abroad)? Visit one of these web sites:
(Private American Schools Overseas): www.iss.edu
(DoDEA - Military School system): www.odedodea.edu/pers/
3. Create a memorial for yourself, a classmate or a friend.
The American Overseas Schools Historical Society (AOSHS) has come
up with a creative idea - memorial bricks, blocks & pavers which would be
included in the AOSHS Historical Park in Wichita, KS! Pricing will range from
$100 to $2,400. For specifics, contact Dr. Ann Bamberger at:
abamberger@juno.com .

4. Big changes on the OVERSEAS BRATS web site: www.overseasbrats.com !
The OVERSEAS BRATS web site is under new web site management and has
undergone an extensive overhaul. New web masters include a mother/son, two
generation "Brat" team, Sharon Ray Rennon (HH Arnold HS/Wiesbaden/Germany
& Nouasseur HS/Morocco'58), and Laith Renno (Sana, Yemen; Beirut, Lebanon;
American School in London; Frankfurt JHS/Germany, & Frankfurt International
High School'88.) The web site includes a message center. My sincerest thanks
to Cheryl Wallach Browning (Alconbury HS/England'86) who from July 1998 to
September 2000 did a terrific job as web master!

 5. Certified Planner certification. Interested in developing skills that
will help your alumni group, reunion committee, or with Military Brats &
Overseas Brats affairs? This course is for anyone and everyone!

6. Anyone live out in Colorado or considering the area for a get-together
for friends or classmates in 2001?

7. Brat Reflection. Memorials.
Memorials of brick, block and paver as advertised in item #3 are
wonderful ways to have people remember us, and I hope you will consider
this great offer by AOSHS and take advantage of it. These memorials in the
AOSHS Historical Park would preserve for generations the special people that
made a major impact on our lives. People like you!!!
What is also important to me is what I call the memorial of the heart,
that special place in the heart where we have the cherished memories and feelings
of great Brat friends, those we knew grewing up, and our beloved educators.
True, that special memorial can only be viewed and interperted by one
person, but it's a memorial that lives with us the rest of our lives.
Each memorial for our favored friends and Brats begins from the day we
first get acquainted, and is constantly under daily construction. The
memorial of the heart for our Brat friends only becomes complete the day
people leave our lives, in most cases by death.
Another way to look at the memorial of the heart?
Growing up in the Far East, I learned that as long as the memory of a
loved one is preserved, they are never really gone from our lives.

6. Southern California Military & Overseas Brats.
A regional get-together is coming your way, Saturday, January 20,
2001. Details pending. Interested?

7. May 2000 edition of OVERSEAS BRATS magazine.
Would you like a free copy? Just need a name and a regular mailing
address to send it to. Your magazine will be sent to you on or
about November 30.

8. "Wichita Gathering," Oct. 19-22, 2001 quick review.
-100 Military & Overseas Brats, educators & family came
representing 40 U.S. Stateside bases and 68 overseas schools
from the 1940's to the 1990's.
We: ....spent time learning about finding our friends...
....talked about getting ourselves organized and doing
reunions...
....took quality time to network and get to know those of our
heritage...
....touched our history by visiting the AOSHS archives and
heard about the exciting future plans for our museum, visitor's
center, and historical park....
....showed-n-telled our heritage among ourselves and during
the exhibition....
....partied with karaoke one evening and danced away another.
A full review will be in the December 2000 edition of OVERSEAS
BRATS magazine.

Subject: Hi Bill
To: webmaster@vahs.org
I've got some news you may want to post on the Verdun website.

The five Verdun alumni who live in Boise, ID will be getting together
Tuesday, June 20th at the Sandpiper Restaurant for a mini-reunion. I find it
quite amazing that five people who attended Verdun AHS in 1961-62 are living
in Boise, ID, population 150,000. Attendees will be: Phil Emerson ('64), Mary
Lou Williams (Olsen, '62), Mike Hicks ('62), Mary Marshall (Ward,'62) and Ted
Molis ('62).

I'm not sure if you are in charge, Bill, of what goes on the website or not.
You may want to wait until after the 20th and then I can send you a little
info on what a good time (or not) that we had. Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,
Phil Emerson

I had a GRAND time at Homecoming in Dallas (Aug. 5-8,1999)  I  do have a  list of registrants.  I did not get a chance to talk to all of them, but here it is.

Mitch Manning (and wife) 1960     It was GREAT chatting with him.
Gail Gunther Concannon 1961
George Junne 1961     Sounds like my name
Flo Adams Davidson   1963
Roger Ketron (and wife) 1963     Great reliving old times.
Merlin Dan Kieborz (and wife) 1963
Sandy Lang Zasadil   1963
Mary Tina Lindbert Morgan 1963
Christine Riddle Wilkins (and husband)  1963
Dinah Riddle     1963     I only had a few minutes to chat with the Riddle sisters, but it was  such a pleasure.
John Sargent       1963     Gray hair but still has that kid's face.
Doug Schaeffer   1963
Robert Smith 1963
Rae Van Fleet Marquis 1963
John Westerbeck [and wife] 1963
Nancy Zimmer Duncan    1967
Estelle Wheatley Eckert 1971
Ken Wheatley, Jr.

Because I was working finances and the doors and anything else, I did not have a chance to talk to everyone as I wanted.  However, I made the rounds as best I could.  Verdun was able to have two tables at dinner and was one of the most represented schools, even though comparatively our numbers were

small  It was a pleasure being around someone who not only had the same military experiences, but who also went to the same school.  As you can see, though, the class of 1963 outdid themselves.  I don't know what happened to  other old farts (and newer farts) but Homecoming was definitely worth it!  As

you probably know, Overseas Brats will be having its gathering this fall in New Orleans.  I don't think I will be there but it will be another opportunity for Verdun people to show up.

While on that note, some of the Verdun people and Joe Condrill of Overseas Brats will tell you that I have kept a Verdun cheer alive for a few years, sometimes having to outdo another school of four or five people!  To win or tie last year, I was forced to do a handspring, something I was not able to do even in high school!  I landed on my butt, but tied for first place.   If I do not show up for New Orleans, someone (or someones) should keep the name of Verdun alive.

All of you should know of the fantastic efforts of Dr. Tom Drysdale.  He has our Brats park going in Wichita, and had the architect's model at Homecoming.  It is a monument to US and we MUST support it.  Go to the Overseas Brats site (www.overseasbrats.com) to find out more about it.  Drysdale is collecting photos, letter jackets, home movies, diplomas, interviews, year books, school newspapers, photos, and any other memorabilia, so if you have ANYTHING you want to go in our national archives, get it to him.  Also, donations are being accepted.  This is a project that will probably cost about $20,000,000 by completion.  Wichita has donated a wonderful site that is near one of the most visited art museums in the country and has other museums nearby.   Honestly, I don't think you could by that riverfront property for a million dollars!  Also, Drysdale was superintendent of schools in France when some of us were in Verdun in 1961!!

Well, as you can tell, I am excited by Homecoming.  The 2001 Homecoming will be in Wichita for the ribbon cutting.   Hope to see many of you there, if not before.  If any of you are in Greeley, contact me.  My address, phone and E-mail are on the Verdun site.

Peace, love, rock-and roll and yes, I'm still crazy after all these years.

George Junne--Verdun 1961
